A Bit About Us

A bit about us.

Stop Drop And Troll Adventures Ltd. was founded in the spring of 2023 as a way to share our love of fishing with more people.  A year later we were navigating a busy schedule and seeing the rewards of providing some fantastic experiences.   A key component of any fishing  charter is fantastic fishing opportunities but our  biggest  priority is our guests having a safe and great time.  For this reason we try to offer a wide variety of tour options to accommodate any guest.  Whether you are a  hardcore full day fisherman or a family of first timers who want to take in the sights, we will work to provide your ideal trip.

why do we fish from Different Locations

People ask us this a lot.  The truth is that sometimes the kelp is greener… on the other side of the island.

The issue with Vancouver is that Chinook retention  is closed for nearly the entire summer, traditionally opening again Aug 15th.  During this period we head over to the West Coast of Vancouver Island to a small fishing village called Ucluelet.  Summertime in Ucluelet gives us a fantastic opportunity to target bottom fish like halibut, lingcod and rockfish which are present in much higher numbers and have much more generous retention limits than in the Strait of Georgia.  During this time,  vast numbers of  Chinook and Coho are migrating down the salmon highway on the banks found just offshore, gorging themselves to prepare for the long swim to their home rivers.  All this is on top of all of the salmon which are returning to Barkley Sound itself.  The end result is red hot fishing for about 2 months straight.

Late August we head back to Vancouver with West Vancouver fishing opportunities and of course the “Big Show”…. The sept 1st opening at the Fraser River Delta.  This is primetime for big Chinook all the way into late October.

Meet captain Al

Captain Al’s story is one of a deep-rooted passion for the outdoors, honed over decades of experience. Growing up in Ontario, he spent much of his childhood on the water—canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. This connection to nature only grew stronger when he moved to the Sea to Sky corridor 24 years ago.

It wasn’t until an invitation 20 years ago to a fishing float camp in Nootka Sound that Al’s passion for saltwater fishing was ignited. This experience opened his eyes to a whole new world of fishing and set him on a journey to become a skilled and knowledgeable fisherman along the west coast, particularly around Vancouver, Barkley Sound, and the surrounding waters. His years on the water have made him an expert at understanding various fish species and what it takes to reel them in successfully.

Al’s skill set extends beyond fishing. As a ticketed butcher and avid hunter, he has a deep respect for wildlife, maintaining a balance between conservation and enjoying the spoils of the land and sea. This philosophy plays into the way he guides others on fishing trips—ensuring that each outing is not just about the catch, but about the experience and the respect for the environment.

In 2023, Captain Al decided to share his expertise and passion with others by starting his own fishing charter, Stop Drop and Troll Adventures. His goal is simple: to provide guests with a memorable, exciting day on the water, filled with laughs, great fishing. His energy and enthusiasm are contagious, making every trip an adventure that guests won’t want to end.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, Captain Al’s fun and laid-back approach to fishing ensures that everyone walks away with more than just a catch—but a memorable experience to last a lifetime.

conservation

Conservation is very important to us.  We are constantly trying to learn more and employ better techniques to do as little harm to  fish  as possible.  As part of the  Avid Anglers program, we collect DNA samples  to help with stock assessment.   As members we have access to stock assessment data as well as up to date low impact handling training.  This type of information can help us to reduce fish mortality.  This scientific license also allows us to do catch and release DNA sampling in otherwise closed areas.  Click the link to learn more about the avid anglers program.
